Program Description
Law Enforcement
This four-hour course covers the legal definition of a dangerous canine, Texas requirements for notifying the owner of the animal, where to find information about dangerous canines and how to read a dog’s body language. The Canine Encounters course is designed to meet law enforcement officers’ educational requirements as established by legislature in HB 593.
Learning Outcomes:
- TLW understand the legal aspects of encounters with dangerous canines
- TLW know how to know how to effectively deal with situations involving dangerous canines
Content Outline:
- Texas state animal laws
- Canine behavior
- Non-lethal tools
- Conflict avoidance, de-escalation, and use of force
- Surviving an attack
Methods/Teaching Strategies:
- In-person, instructor-led teaching and discussion
- Videos
- Equipment demonstration
Learning Outcomes (Method of Evaluation):
- Scenario-based skills evaluation
- Written exam
On-Campus
$40 Payment will be taken at the class
Training is intended for Peace Officers, Law Enforcement Officers, Detectives, Supervisors, and Patrol Officers. A TCOLE number is required for TCOLE credit.
No civilians are allowed.
