This course is a legislated requirement designed to equip officers with the necessary knowledge and skills for Canine Encounters. It must be completed within two years of licensing and is a requirement for intermediate or advanced proficiency certificates issued after January 1, 2016. The course covers various topics, including Texas State Animal Laws, recognizing and understanding canine behavior, non-lethal tools and methods to prevent and defend against canine attacks, conflict avoidance, de-escalation techniques, principles of the Use of Force Continuum, surviving an attack, and information on other animals in the state of Texas.
