This course is specifically designed for Peace Officers who are working towards their intermediate proficiency certificate on or after April 1, 2018, or those who were licensed on or after April 1, 2018, and within 2 years of their licensing date. The course addresses the increasing frequency of law enforcement responding to individuals in mental health crises. It emphasizes the importance of understanding mental illness and utilizing proven tactics and techniques when interacting with individuals in these situations. These strategies differ from those typically taught to manage conflict, as the underlying elements behind mental illness-related behavior are often not criminal or malicious. By implementing the knowledge gained from this course, officers can ensure their own safety, protect the public, and significantly reduce civil liability.
