This course is designed to certify the student (detention officer) as a Jail Mental Health Officer (Special Officer for Mental Health Assignment under 1701.404 of the Texas Occupations Code). In a jail setting, a Jail Mental Health Officer typically serves as a liaison between the jail and the court and medical/mental health providers. They are generally called upon to assist in de-escalating persons in mental crisis, coordinating care, and assisting with continuity of care as requested.
The course is delivered through a combination of classroom lecture, group discussion and activities, and one-on-one scenario role-play. It covers learning objectives such as understanding common mental disorders, de-escalating people with mental disorders, resources available to assist with the continuity of care, and individual self-care.
